Classics - A.B.

About this Degree

This program provides students with an opportunity to pursue studies in Greek and Roman literature, history, archaeology, art, philosophy, and religion, with or without concentrating on the ancient languages, although some study in Latin and/or Greek is strongly encouraged.

The major comprises five areas of emphasis (AOEs): 1) Classical Culture 2) Classical Culture—Classical Archaeology, 3) Classical Languages—Greek, 4) Classical Languages—Greek & Latin, and 5) Classical Languages—Latin.

All students who enter and most students who transfer to the University Fall 2008 or later must meet the new UGA General Education Core Curriculum requirements (GENED).

Employers:

Career opportunities for graduates include teaching at the secondary level, non-teaching academic positions, museum work, library work, editorial work, positions in the travel and tourist industry, and government positions in foreign service.  The major also prepares students to enter graduate school in classics, comparative literature, linguistics, history, and other fields for university teaching positions. Other opportunities include careers in law, journalism, and business.

Undergraduate Programs

UGA Classics explores Greek and Roman culture (material; intellectual; religious) from Troy to Augustine; Classical languages and literatures (Greek, Latin, and in English translation); and the reception of Classical Antiquity with A.B. and M.A. Classics degrees with multiple areas of emphasis. Double Dawgs degrees focus on careers in Historic Preservation and World Language Education. Minor degrees in Classical Culture and Classics and Comparative Cultures complement degree programs across campus. New to Classics?
