Welcome! The Department of Classics offers to both undergraduate and graduate students from UGA and across the country three exciting summer programs: the Summer Classics Institute, Classics Study Abroad in Rome, and Reacting Abroad in Greece. The Summer Classics Institute offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate Latin and Classics courses and, in alternate years, Intensive Beginning Greek and Intensive Beginning Latin. The Institute curriculum is supplemented by workshops and guest lectures by visiting Master Teachers and other scholars. The program is specifically designed for Latin teachers who wish to continue their education, earn a Master's degree on a summers-only basis, or enhance their teaching. Classics Study Abroad in Rome is a ca. six week long program in Rome that offers advanced couses in Ancient Rome (Topography & Architecture), Ancient Art in Roman Italy, and Reading Rome (Roman Literature in Context); an entry-level course on Roman Culture may be offered if demand justifies it. The Program includes daily excursions to monuments, museums, archaeological sites, and collections in central Italy, as well as a three-day trip to the Bay of Naples (to visit Paestum, Pompeii, Oplontis and Naples), and full-day excursions in Etruria (Caere and Tarquinia) and Latium (Hadrian's Villa and Tivoli). For further information and application forms, please go directly to the Rome Program website. Reacting Abroad in Greece is a four week long program in Athens Greece that offers students the opportunity to experience the innovative "Reacting to the Past" pedagogy abroad. Students will play the "Athens in 403 B.C.E." game while they live and study in the shadow of the Akropolis. For more information and application forms, please go directly to the Reacting Abroad website. |
