The discipline of Classics, as our Mission Statement states, has been central to the rise of universities in general and of the University of Georgia in particular. Classics continues to be fundamental to the humanities and to a liberal education, since a solid foundation in the languages, history, and culture of Graeco-Roman civilization provides a means of understanding the past and the intellectual roots of the present. The Department supports the University’s mission to enhance the “state’s and the nation’s intellectual [and] cultural …. heritage,” as well as the College’s purpose to offer undergraduates “both fundamentals of a liberal education on which to base a lifetime of learning and the opportunity to concentrate in studies which form the foundation for professional pursuits.” Toward these ends, the Department of Classics dedicates itself to ensuring that all aspiring students gain proficiency in the Greek and Latin languages, as well as a broad understanding of classical literature, culture, and history and of the influence of the Graeco-Roman world on the concepts and values of Western civilization.

The Department of Classics has historically met the challenge of its mission statement and looks forward to continued success. The dedicated members of the Classics faculty are nationally and internationally recognized scholars and teachers. The editorial offices of two preeminent journals ( American Journal of Archaeology and Literary Imagination) reside in the Department, and since 1985 members of the Department have received over $2.6 million in grants, fellowships and other awards. The Department of Classics, with its 120 undergraduate major programs (as of Fall 2004), boasts one of the largest programs in the nations, and our M.A. program is widely recognized as one of the very best. We have run a very successful Studies Abroad Program in Rome for over 30 years and a Summer Institute for secondary school teachers for over 20 years. The Department has memberships in the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Our Department is one of the strongest Classics departments in the country.

The Department of Classics of the University of Georgia is located in Park Hall on North Campus, just opposite the Main Library. The Department currently boasts fourteen full-time faculty, in addition to adjunct faculty in the Departments of Anthropology, Geology, History, and Philosophy; the Lamar Dodd School of Art; and the School of Law. We offer degrees in Greek, Latin, and Classical Culture at the undergraduate level, and M.A. degrees in Classical Languages (with specializations in Greek, Latin, or a combination of both languages) and in Latin (our non-thesis degree). Masters work in Latin can be completed on a summers-only basis in our Summer Classics Institute. The M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Foreign Language Education/Latin are available through the College of Education, as are courses leading to teacher certification; please contact the College of Education directly for more information on these programs.
