Assessment Procedures for the Graduate Program
of the Department of Classics

ASSESSMENT POLICY

The assessment procedure is designed to evaluate the success of the graduate program. It uses multiple measures to evaluate the program over time, when graduate students first enter the program, in their final semester, and again after a five-year interval. The evaluation is tied to the following specific set of objectives for our Masters students who are either current or potential secondary school teachers or are preparing to enter Ph.D. programs in Classics or related fields at other institutions:

  1. students are able to read Latin and/or Greek at the graduate level;
  2. students have increased knowledge of developments in scholarship in Latin, Greek, and classical culture and are able to conduct original research;
  3. students are prepared to enter a Ph.D. program in Classics, or a related discipline;
  4. students have knowledge of developments in Latin pedagogy;
  5. students have greater effectiveness as a classroom teacher and experience increased job satisfaction;
  6. students participate in professional activities in Classics (e.g., membership in state, regional, and/or national organizations).

Not all of these objectives will pertain to all students.

To assess the success of the Department in meeting these objectives, the Department uses the following measures:

  1. a diagnostic Latin and/or Greek reading exam/s for all entering students;
  2. a reading list exam administered near the end of the first year of study with questions related to objective 2 above;
  3. a survey of students during their first and last semesters of enrollment in the Department and five years after graduation with questions related to objectives 2-6 above;
  4. a survey of principals/foreign language supervisors in schools where graduates are employed one year after graduation, with questions related to objectives 4-5 above;
  5. a survey of graduate advisors in Ph.D. programs where graduates are enrolled one year after graduation, with questions related to objectives 1-3 above;
  6. student course evaluation forms for courses on the student's program of study;
  7. a review of course syllabi and program requirements by a Latin Teacher Advisory Board every 5 years to ensure match of program offerings to current needs of secondary teachers.

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

To implement the assessment policy the Graduate Faculty established the following procedures:

  1. The graduate coordinator will conduct an exit interview with each graduate sometime near the end of the student's last semester of enrollment, if possible soon after he/she has passed the thesis defense. During the interview, the graduate coordinator will explain the purpose of the interview, will have the student fill out a permanent address card, and will ask the student the questions on FORM 1. The address card and interview form will be maintained in the departmental office (Park Hall, Room 221) in a file marked "Exit Interviews."
  2. After conducting the interview, the graduate coordinator will give the student a second, anonymous, interview form (FORM 2) which will give the student the opportunity to answer questions anonymously. The student will return this form directly to the departmental secretary in Park Hall, Room 221 where it will be maintained in the file marked "Exit Interviews."
  3. One year after graduation, a questionnaire (FORMS 4 and 5) will be sent to the student to be forwarded either to the principal/foreign language supervisor or to the graduate advisor of an advanced academic program to assess the student's preparation and effectiveness. The returned surveys will be maintained in the departmental office in a file marked "Surveys."
  4. A follow-up interview form (FORM 3) will be sent to the student's permanent address five years after graduation. Students will return these to the graduate coordinator who will maintain them in the departmental office in a file marked "Follow-up Interviews."
  5. Responses to the exit and follow-up interviews will be reviewed annually by the graduate coordinator and Department head; the information will be shared with the graduate faculty for discussion and for possible program revision.
