Application for Admission to the Graduate Programs in Classics

Admissions Criteria

Applicants to the Department of Classics should have the equivalent of an undergraduate major (or close to it) in Greek or Latin (preferably both). Applicants should possess an excellent undergraduate record demonstrating competence in at least one or both of the Classical languages. Admission is highly selective. We are looking for motivated students who are best able to meet the academic challenges of the program and the professional demands of the Classics profession.

The department evalutes each file on its individual merits as it relates to the goals of the program, and it assesses each file relative to the overall pool of applicants. Selection involves evaluation of an applicant's academic background, previous scholarly performance, and potential for research and professional activity. Evaluation of an application involves review of academic transcripts, personal statement, writing sample, GRE scores, honors and activities, recommendation letters, and relevant work experience.

The Department and the University offer a number of Assistantship Awards to new and continuing students for study during the academic year.

Consult the Graduate School website for up-to-date information on tuition and fees. Budget planning should allow for an increase in tuition and nonresident fees of approximately five to ten percent per year.

Admissions Applications

UGA Graduate School application forms are available at the University's Graduate School Website (www.grad.uga.edu). In addition to the online application form, the Graduate School requires an official report of GRE scores and two official transcripts from each institution of higher education attended.

Financial Assistantship Awards

Assistantships are academic awards generally made in the Spring to begin in the Fall of the following academic year. Each year the Department of Classics supports between 75% and 100% of its M.A. students with Graduate Assistantship Awards. The assistantships are merit-based and awarded on a competitive basis among both current and newly accepted students. Most assistantship awards require 13 hours of work per week in the Department with a required course load of at least 12 credit hours.

For the academic year 2007-2008, the assistantships provide an academic year stipend of $10,392 and include a waiver of nonresident fees. Each semester recipients pay a reduced matriculation fee of only $25, a modest activity fee ($563), and a graduate student health insurance premium ($231 fall, $304 spring/summer). Assistantships are renewable for the second year, contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

The Graduate School also awards assistantships to a small number of highly qualified applicants. These awards are merit-based and highly competitive. Departments submit a list of nominees to the Graduate School. Each nominee is then evaluated by a University-wide faculty panel in early March. Selections are based on the applicant's academic record, test scores, recommendations, and other pertinent information. All students who submit the departmental and Graduate School applications for assistantship will be considered for this competition.

For 2007-2008 Graduate School Assistantships provide a monthly stipend of approximately $1,483 ($31,143 approximate total value of the two-year award) and include a waiver of nonresident fees. Each semester recipients pay a reduced matriculation fee of only $25, a modest activity fee ($563), and a graduate student health insurance premium ($231 fall, $304 spring/summer). These awards provide continuous funding for 21 months (two academic years plus the intervening summer), contingent upon satisfactory academic progress and the recommendation of the department.

Consult the University's Graduate School Website (www.grad.uga.edu) for information on student loans.

Duties for Students on Assistantships

Assistantship Awards require recipients to work 13-16 hours per week in the department, usually for an individual professor. Responsibilities include assistance in academic activities including proctoring/grading exams or papers, supervision of discussion sections, assisting with research projects, etc. Many students teach sections of elementary Latin during their second year, at the discretion of the Department.

Deadlines which fall on Saturday, Sunday, or holidays will default to the next working day.
