SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES & AWARDS In addition to financial aid award by the University of Georgia, the Department of Classics offers a number of awards and scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study. For Undergraduate Students:The Warlick-Mannion Scholarship: The Department invites applications for the Warlick-Mannion Scholarship each year. The scholarship was established in honor of Charles Louis Warlick and Nora Patricia Mannion, and is open to undergraduates who will study Classical languages at the University. The scholarship may be renewed upon re-application. Deadline for completed applications is February 1 of each year. The Edward E. Best Award: The Department will award the Edward E. Best, Jr. Award each spring to an undergraduate student majoring in Latin or Greek who has a GPA of at least 3.5 and has written the best paper(s) in a class offered by the Department of Classics faculty or adjunct faculy during the preceding three semesters. The paper(s) will be evaluated on originality, research, and presentation. The award is designed to assist the recipient to offset expenses, such as tuition and fees, directly related to the pursuit of the major. The recipient of the award must take at least one Latin or Greek course during each semester of the year the award is held; these courses must be taken in residence in Athens. Students are nominated by a member of the faculty for the Best Award. Deadline for nominations is March 15 each year. The Classics Prize: The Classics Prize is awarded to the graduating senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, has performed at the highest level in the major (Classical Culture, Greek, or Latin) during his/her undergraduate career, exhibits very high academic standards in all other course work, and has displayed qualities of leadership while at the University of Georgia. All graduating seniors majoring in the Department are eligible for consideration, but students must be nominated by a member of the Classics Faculty. The Awards Committee, after examining the undergraduate record of the nominees, will select the winner of the Classics Prize. In exceptional years, two majors may be awarded the Classics Prize; similarly, there may be years when no prize is awarded. The recipient will receive an inscribed copy of the Oxford Classical Dictionary at the end-of-year celebration for graduating seniors in May, as well as a complimentary membership to the Archaeological Institute of America, Athens Society. Deadline for nominations is April 15 each year. The Linda J. Piper Award: The Linda J. Piper Award for Studies Abroad Fund is a joint fund of the Departments of Classics and History, administered by the Classics Department. The award, established in honor of Professor Linda J. Piper, alternates between the Departments of Classics and History with Classics bestowing the award in odd-numbered years. It is intended to assist students to offset expenses, such as tuition, fees, and transportation costs, directly related to study abroad. All students majoring in the Classics Department are eligible to apply for the award. Please see the Undergraduate Coordinator or your advisor for more information. Application deadline is March 15 for Classics students. The David L. Thompson Studies Abroad Scholarship: The David L. Thompson Studies Abroad Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. David Lowell Thompson, a former member of the Classics Department faculty. The scholarship is intended to assist undergraduate students who study abroad in the Classics within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Selection criteria are based upon academic excellence, with preference given to majors, minors, and graduate students in the Department of Classics. Recipients of the Thompson Scholarship must enroll in and complete the Study Abroad Program in Rome sponsored by the University of Georgia Department of Classics. Application deadline is March 1. Gantz Prizes: The Gantz Prizes were established in honor of Professor Timothy N. Gantz to recognize outstanding undergraduate students in the study of the Greek language and literature at the University of Georgia. Each year the Classics Department will award the Gantz Prizes--cash or book awards--to students enrolled in Greek classes, from elementary through advanced levels. The Department will award the Gantz Prizes on the basis of sight exams taken in the spring by students at each level. For registration deadline and exam date, check the Classics calendar. For Graduate Students:The Richard A. LaFleur Teacher Scholarship:The LaFleur Scholarship Fund, established in honor of Professor Richard A. LaFleur, provides a limited number of scholarships (up to $500 each) for Latin teachers enrolled in the University of Georgia's Summer Classics Institute. Only teachers of Latin (K-12) who are accepted (or with application pending) to the Classics Institute are eligible to apply. Deadline for application is April 1 each year. The Linda J. Other, non-UGA Scholarships:MANSON A. STEWART TEACHING TRAINING AWARD: AMERICAN CLASSICAL LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS: The ACL offers a number of scholarships and awards for Latin teachers for summer study: The Arthur Patch McKinlay Scholarship, The Ed Phinney Commemorative Scholarship, and the Maureen O'Donnell Scholarship. GEORGIA CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION (GCA) SUMMER STUDY SCHOLARSHIP: The purpose of the scholarship is to help teachers who are currently teaching Latin in the state of Georgia to undertake summer activities which will enhance their teaching. The GCA Scholarship is designed for teachers who are currently teaching Latin either part or full time in Georgia and will be doing so next year and who are members The scholarship may be used for 1) any college approved study abroad program relating to the classics, 2) study abroad programs sponsored by classical organizations (e.g., Vergilian Society, CAMWS, ACL, etc., 3) graduate work in the classics, 4) ACL Institute, 5) classics workshops or institutes, 6) any study related to the classics which the applicant deems important and helpful. Deadline for application is April 15 each year. Consult the GCA website for more information. HOPE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP: The Hope Teacher Scholarship, funded by the Georgia Lottery for Education, is a counterpart to the Hope Scholarship program for college undergraduates. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements may receive as much as $4,500 a year toward graduate study. Horace Mann Companies (NYSE: HMN) offers scholarships totaling $30,000
to help educators continue their education. The company has provided more
than one million dollars in scholarships since 1992. This year's scholarship
program for Educators will offer 36 awards including: one $5,000 award
payable over four years, fifteen $1,000 awards payable over two years,
and 20 one-time $500 awards. To be eligible, an applicant must be an educator
employed by a U.S. public or private school district or U.S. public or
private college/university and planning to take classes at a two or four-year
accredited college or university. The applicant must have a minimum of
two years teaching experience. Interested educators should contact their
