I. Visual Information

II. General Information about the Parthenon Frieze
- It is an Ionic element running over porches & around
exterior of the naos
- It was probably designed by Pheidias
- It was in position by 438 BCE when we know the roof
was completed
- 160 m. long (524 feet) and ca. 1 m. high
- 80% of the frieze is extant.
- 114 rectangular blocks of varying lengths. Longest
is 4.43 m. long and sits over the E door of the naos. The average length
is 1.22 m.
- 378 human figures
- 245 animals
- It is 0.05 m. deep and is a little deeper at top than
at bottom.
- It stands ca. 12 m. from ground level.
- The figures are half life-size.
- The background was painted blue; figures were embellished
with paint and some bronze details were added.
