  • Petronius, Satyrica (Branham and Kinney, trans.)

GRADING:

  • Quizzes: 10%
  • Tests: 50%
  • Writing assignments: 15%
  • Final exam: 25%

    FINAL: FRI, 16 DEC, 8-11 AM

GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION:

1. Here is the description of this course found in the UGA Bulletin: "Ancient prose fiction (in English translation), including the Latin novels of Petronius and Apuleius and examples of the Greek novel. Topics include the relationship between the novel and other literary genres, the social and intellectual background of the authors, the themes of love, travel, and magic, and the novel's audience."

2. There will be two tests during the term.

3. There will be several short quizzes and several short writing assignments.

4. Make-ups: Quizzes and tests may be made up only if your absence is due to a medical or other legitimate emergency and if you have notified me of your absence from class on or before the day of the quiz or test.

5. All academic work must meet the standards contained in “A Culture of Honesty.” Students are responsible for informing themselves about those standards before performing any academic work.

6. The course syllabus is a general plan for the course; deviations announced to the class by the instructor may be necessary.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR 6250:

Term paper (20-30 pages). Students enrolled in 6250 should talk to me at the beginning of the term about topics.
