Welcome to the web site for CLAS 4250 / 6250: The Ancient Novel. This web site is designed to serve as a basic reference tool for students enrolled in this course; it is not designed to substitute for class attendance, participation, and homework.

Course Description:

CLAS 4250 / 6250: 3 hours. Ancient prose fiction (in English translation), including the Latin novels of Petronius and Apuleius and examples of the Greek novel. Topics include the relationship between the novel and other literary genres, the social and intellectual background of the authors, the themes of love, travel, and magic, and the novel's audience.
