Athenaze 2004

On March 20th, 2004, the Department held its first Athenaze, and it was a great success. Planned as a reunion and open house, the event attracted alumni, current UGA students, high school Latin teachers and their students from Georgia and Tennessee, and local Athenians to our Department. A full day’s slate of activities included a stimulating panel by several Georgia Latin Teachers entitled “Reports from the Field” and moderated by MA student and master teacher Randy Fields and a fascinating lecture on “Nero’s Cultural Politics” given by Professor Niall Slater of Emory University. A book sale, informal tour of our facilities, and delicious meals rounded out the day’s events. In addition to serving as inaugural speaker, Niall Slater gave a seminar on the fragments of Aristophanes the night before. Thank you to all who made Athenaze 2004 a great success.
